Pick the Perfect Planting Time Timing is key! The best time to plant garlic is in the fall, about four to six weeks before the ground freezes. This gives the cloves time to establish roots before winter. If you’re in a mild climate, you can get away with planting in early spring, but the bulbs may be smaller. Find a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining, nutrient-rich soil to set your garlic up for success. Planting Garlic the Right Way Now for the fun part—planting! Break apart your garlic bulb into individual cloves, but leave the skins on. Push each clove into the soil with the pointy end facing up, about two inches deep and a 6 inches apart. Once they’re all snug in the ground, cover them with a layer of mulch like straw or shredded leaves to keep them cozy through the winter.
The Big Harvest! When summer rolls around and the lower leaves start turning yellow, it’s time to harvest. Gently loosen the soil and pull up your bulbs, then let them cure in a dry, shady spot for a couple of weeks.
